Rf values for spinach pigments

Jan 02, 2020 · In thin layer chromatography, retention factor (Rf) is the distance that a compound travels through the stationary phase (TLC plate) between the origin spot and the distance the solvent front moved above the origin. To calculate the value of the Rf, you just have to apply this simple formula: Fresh spinach was blanched, pureed, packed in glass thermal‐death‐time tubes and processed in an oil bath at 240, 250, 260, 270, and 280°F for a process value equal to Fo 4.9. Color measurements indicated a difference of 4.1 units between the controls and the samples processed at 280°F, and 11.6 units between the controls and the samples processed at 240°F.

Key Concepts I: Plant Pigment Chromatography. Paper chromatography is a technique used to separate a mixture into its component molecules. The molecules migrate, or move up the paper, at different rates because of differences in solubility, molecular mass, and hydrogen bonding with the paper. Apr 21, 2017 · Rf = distance moved by compound from original spot divided by the distance moved by solvent from original spot. It is important to remember that several factors can influence the reliability of the Rf value, these include humidity, temperature, solvent, pigment extract preparation, and the amounts of the material present.

spinach. What are the 2 categories of colored pigments that leaves of plants contain? What would have happened to the Rf values if 30:70 hexane acetone were used instead of 70:30 hexane:acteone? The Rf values would have been larger because 30:70 is more polar so the pigments would have...

The Rf value is a numerical constant that is unique for each of the four pigments identified in spinach. The ratio of the distance each pigment travels, as compared with the distance traveled by the mobile phase (from the start to finish lines),will be unique to that pigment alone.

Nov 11, 2009 · The Rf values for each pigment are calculated to establish the relative rate of migration for each pigment. This value represents the ratio of the distance a pigment traveled on the chromatogram relative to the distance the solvent front moved. Scientists use the Rf value of a sample to identify the molecule. Band number 1 yielded an Rf value of .5 with a distance of 22mm. Band number 2 traveled 34 mm with an Rf value of .773. Band number 3 traveled 42 mm with an Rf value of . 955. The edge of the spinach leaf was placed over the pencil line and using of a coin it was used to gently press on the spinach leaf to create a single green line over the pencil line. The line is suppose to be thin and concentrated with the pigment from the spinach leaf. Then, repeat the edging process carefully about 3-4 times. Nutritional Value. Spinach possess an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, vitamin A, phosphorus, potassium and iron. Spinach possesses various pigments and phytonutrients which help to protect skin from the harmful UV rays of sun. It prevents the skin cancer...Contribute to codegram/spinach development by creating an account on GitHub. Based on the results, which pigment has the highest molecular weight? (5 points)–Answer below: 10. The Rf values would be different if a different solvent was used because the solvent would have different characteristics which affects the capillary action (because the Rf value is distance pigment migrated (mm) / distance solvent front migrated (mm), the capillary action would have a large impact on the Rf value), attraction of solvent ...

Pigments are compounds in plants that give it color. They absorb certain spectra of light and reflect others. For example, chlorophyll reflects green light. Particularly intense reflection will augment the color of the plant. Spinach pigments serve a variety of functions for both the plant and those who...

12. What does the Rf value represent? If you were to perform your experiment on a chromatography strip that was twice the length of the one you used, would your Rf values still be the same? Why? The Rf value represents the ratio of the distance a pigment moved on the chromatogram relative to the distance the solvent front moved.
