The cards works great except it has a bit of coil whine. My 980Ti (an evga FTW card) also had some coil whine, but the fans were also a lot louder when gaming on that card so I wouldn't hear it much unless it was a menu running at like 2000fps or something like that.This is from wiki.. Nov 21, 2020 · Yesterday I installed Sapphire 6800xt reference card and I was expecting a bit of coil whine in benchmarks. When I launched games and pushed the graphics with unlimited FPS I was surprised quiet a lot, coil whine was still there. The coil whine noise is definitely louder than fan noise (maxes at 1600RPM in stock setting). Coil whine is not normal. The one and only time I've had to deal with it was when I put a newer GTX card in a system with a 500 watt PSU (a cheap pos PSU) and the coil noise would sound like running water when a game would start.

Putting it at 71% for me makes it very quiet and reduces performance by about 2% at 50 fps and 10% at 120 fps (the lower it goes, the less it is affected). Also, the coil whine of these cards is subtle enough and high-frequency enough that it is completely blocked out by closed-back headphones anyway. Every single gen you get people complaining about coil whine and it doesn't matter if it's Nvidia or AMD, there will always be people affected. It's classic confirmation bias at play. Someone is unfortunate to get a card with coil whine and goes off the forums and reads some other threads where people have coil whine with same/similar cards.

Is coil whine always a warning sign of a hardware failure, or completely normal under high stress?
